Johanna Shelton leads External Affairs for OpenAI on the U.S. Policy & Partnerships team, focusing on strategic engagement with civil society and external stakeholders on societal impacts of AI. She previously spent 16 years at Google, where she built and led public policy teams working with Congress, White House, federal agencies, and international stakeholders on issues spanning AI, privacy, intellectual property, competition, broadband, and autonomous vehicles. Johanna served as Senior Counsel for Telecommunications & the Internet at the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee and advised on media and telecommunications policy at the Federal Communications Commission. She practiced law at Latham & Watkins and clerked for Judge Karen Nelson Moore of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Johanna holds a J.D. magna cum laude and a B.S.B.A. summa cum laude from Georgetown University. She has two children and lives outside Washington D.C.
